The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment
England's Senior Infantry Regiment
The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (also known as the PWRR or the Tigers) are a fighting force to be reckoned with. In the regiment’s thirty year history, the Tigers have proven their bravery in the field over and over. In 2004, Johnson Beharry won the regiment’s first Victoria Cross for his courage under fire in Iraq.
The PWRR formed on the 9th September 1992. Diana, Princess of Wales, served as their Colonel-in-Chief alongside Queen Margarethe II of Denmark until 1997. Queen Margarethe remains the regiment’s sole Colonel-in-Chief.
The regiment’s three battalions have different roles and specialisms.
1 PWRR
The First Battalion is a light role infantry battalion. They fight on foot in close combat wherever they are needed. The battalion also has an Anti-Tank Platoon.
The battalion is currently based in Woolwich. At present, 1PWRR are stationed in Dhekelia Barracks in Cyprus.
3 PWRR
The Regiment’s Third Battalion are a reserve battalion made up of paid, part time soldiers. Their headquarters is in Canterbury, but they have companies across Kent and Sussex. 3 PWRR’s soldiers step up when they’re needed in the UK and abroad.
3 PWRR have also been involved in OP INTERFLEX. They are also preparing for their annual deployment exercise, Ex BALTIC FIST.
4 PWRR
The Fourth Battalion formed in 2017 as the PWRR’s second reserve battalion. 4 PWRR has companies across the South of England in Edgware, Farnham, Portsmouth and Redhill.
4 PWRR have also taken part in OP INTERFLEX this year. Two warrant officers and one soldier also deployed in Kenya at the Land Regional Hub.
Why doesn't the PWRR have a Second Battalion?
On December 1st 2021, The PWRR’s second battalion became the second battalion of the Ranger Regiment. The Ranger Regiment is part of the Army Special Operations Brigade. Soldiers in 2 RANGER are Special Operations Capable. They train (and sometimes fight with) soldiers in the United Kingdom’s partner nations. 2 RANGER work with partner nations in East Africa.
Though they are no longer officially Tigers, 2 RANGER keep the traditions of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.
